Remedies for Acne During Pregnancy
Pregnancy causes several hormonal changes in a woman that can lead to acne. The Mayo Clinic explains that acne can cause emotional distress and scarring of the skin. Treatment can improve a woman's self-confidence and diminish the chances of scarring. Many acne medications are not recommended for use during pregnancy. Women should always consult a doctor before trying any acne remedies while pregnant.
The American Pregnancy Association warns pregnant women against using most over-the-counter acne medications, except ones that contain benzoyl peroxide. This ingredient is considered safe for use during pregnancy. Benzoyl peroxide is found in cleansers, moisturizers and astringents. When choosing a benzoyl peroxide product, avoid those that have additional ingredients such as salicylic acid, retinoids or other named acids.
Any facial cleanser that is free of acne-treatment medications is likely to be safe during pregnancy. Cleansing once in the morning and once at night can help reduce the risk of acne. Some women may find that the cleanser they used before pregnancy is more drying or harsh now because of the hormonal changes. Experiment with different cleansers. Creamy cleansers can help with dryness, while foaming types reduce oil. Avoid scrubbing the face, as this can make acne more irritated and visible.
Try a natural astringent, such as witch hazel, to help remove oil and dry existing blemishes. Some natural astringents also contain different acids, such as salicylic, and should be avoided during pregnancy.
Select an oil-free facial moisturizer and use it after every face washing. Even an oily face needs moisturizer; it may just take some experimenting to find the right formula.
Touching the face can introduce dirt and bacteria to the pores. Putting phones or dirty hats against the skin can also make acne worse. Avoid picking or squeezing existing blemishes, as this can cause infection or scarring.
Tea Tree Oil
Use tea tree oil or gels made of 5 percent tea tree oil to treat mild-to-moderate acne, according to the Mayo Clinic. Watch for skin irritation and be patient, as this method takes longer to work than commercial acne remedies.
