Sebaceous glands excrete oil onto the skin’s surface. When this oil and naturally occurring bacteria combine within a clogged pore, blemishes arise, causing acne. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases says that the body’s natural response is to fight the infection by sending white blood cells to the site. This results in whiteheads and pus development characteristic of acne. Using natural home remedies to treat your acne is often gentler and less expensive than commercial products while delivering similar results.

Deep Pore Steaming

Using the natural properties of water and heat, facial steaming effectively opens pores to flush out unwanted impurities and debris. Health News asserts that facial steaming is a helpful application for removing dead skin cells, circulatory improvement, acne reduction and loosening blackheads for cleansing. Steaming your face helps to clean deep within the pores where acne begins.

In a pot, add water and four to five drops of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is a natural antimicrobial with a pleasant scent. Bring the mixture to a boil and place the pot on a safe surface that you can easily sit or stand over. Wrap a towel securely around your head and the pot to trap the steam. Steam your face for approximately five to 10 minutes once a week.

Blemish Spot Treatment

In-home spot treatments can help open clogged pores and reduce the size of blemishes for quick healing. Lesions, blackheads and whiteheads often erupt quickly, so using a spot treatment can help to control their development and reduce those already present on the skin.

Combine 3 tbsp. of honey with 1 tbsp. of cinnamon in a small bowl. Apply the spot treatment directly to the pimple before going to bed. Wash off with warm water the next morning. Use this treatment for at least two weeks or until the pimple disappears.

Everyday Cleanser

A daily cleanser is crucial in preventing and reducing acne, and maintaining healthy skin. Cleansers help to eliminate contaminants that can accumulate on the skin through the day. According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, environmental factors such as pollution and increased humidity exacerbate acne symptoms causing inflamed skin and blemishes.

Using natural ingredients to eliminate deterrents helps to soothe and rejuvenate acne-prone skin. For an effective yet gentle cleanser, mix 5 tbsp. of flaxseed oil, 5 tbsp. of olive oil, 11 tbsp. of castor oil and 25 to 30 drops of an essential oil of your choice. Consider using lavender, tea tree or thyme oil due to the cleansing antifungal and antibacterial properties.
