Consider following your cleansing regimen with an exfoliating scrub one or two times per week to reduce the amount of debris and dead skin cells clogging your pores, adds the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.

Proper Products

Certain cosmetic products, lotions and sunscreens can create more pimples, so focus on finding products that are labeled “noncomedogenic” or “nonacnegenic,” meaning that they won’t clog your pores. The Palo Alto Medical Foundation also recommends using oil-free products with sunscreen to reduce your risk of getting sunburns.

Stress Reduction

Being stressed can lead to behaviors that contribute to acne flare-ups. Whereas eating poorly, not getting enough exercise, touching your face nervously and not having proper hygiene can lead to more pimples on your face, stress-reducing activities such as yoga can help balance hormone levels and increase your pore-clearing sweat output while improving your sense of well-being, explains Discovery Health online. However, Discovery Health warns against wearing tight, synthetic fabrics while you exercise as they can rub against acne and spread bacteria and oil.


If your lifestyle changes haven’t effectively reduced the amount of pimples on your skin, consider using over-the-counter topical lotions that contain active ingredients such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, suggests the Mayo Clinic. They can help dry oil, kill bacteria and aid in the removal of dead skin cells. If your pimples continue to flourish with consistent use of these products, consider seeing a doctor who can prescribe a stronger topical treatment such as tretinoin, an antibiotic, a potent medication such as isotretinoin or an oral contraceptive if you’re a woman.


If you want to take pimple removal up another notch, you may opt to have laser and light therapies done to reduce oil and bacteria production, states the Mayo Clinic. You may also invest in procedures such as microdermabrasion or chemical procedures, which are thought to best reduce pimples in conjunction with other acne treatments, according to the Mayo Clinic.
