Strong soaps containing sodium lauryl sulfate and other detergents strip away the natural oils that keep your skin looking hydrated and fresh. Heavy makeup can clog pores and cause breakouts. Step 3

Exfoliate the skin on your face once per week. Dead skin cells, dirt and oil can accumulate on the surface of the skin, thereby increasing your risk of acne including whiteheads and blackheads. Stop smoking if you are a smoker. The repeated act of pursing your lips while smoking can cause fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth. What's more, smoking can also dehydrate your skin so it becomes more susceptible to daily damage. Smoking can even constrict blood vessels in your face thereby decreasing circulation. Smoking is one of the worse things you can do to the skin on your face, so it is best to quit immediately.

Step 5

Watch for changes in the skin on your face. Spots, dry patches, yellowing and other sudden changes could be the sign of an underlying medical problem that needs evaluation. See your dermatologist for a check up when you notice something different on your face.
