Proper Facial Skin Care Information

The skin on your face is subject to constant mistreatment. The sun, free radicals and aging can all leave your facial skin looking parched and damaged. For proper skin care information, look to dermatologists and medical professionals who understand the healthy ways to care for your facial skin so that it looks younger and healthier. Properly hydrate and protect your skin to put your best face forward for years to come.

Step 1

Apply sunscreen on a daily basis. Leaving your skin unprotected from the sun is one of the fastest ways to damage your skin. UVA and UVB rays penetrate the skin, making it look dry, discolored and more susceptible to fine lines and wrinkles. Use regularly a high-quality sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher so it becomes a habit in your skin care routine.

Step 2

Opt for gentle products that care for your skin without drying, says Strong soaps containing sodium lauryl sulfate and other detergents strip away the natural oils that keep your skin looking hydrated and fresh. Heavy makeup can clog pores and cause breakouts. Instead, look for mild products without soaps or heavy oils, which could exacerbate skin problems and make your skin look uneven and unhealthy.

Step 3

Exfoliate the skin on your face once per week. Dead skin cells, dirt and oil can accumulate on the surface of the skin, thereby increasing your risk of acne including whiteheads and blackheads. Exfoliating helps slough away surface skin cells to clean the skin and leave it looking smooth and healthy. Exfoliating scrub can be purchased from the drugstore or you can make your own by combining a cup of brown sugar with three tbsp. olive oil and one tbsp. milk. Apply the scrub to your face in a circular motion for one minute before rinsing away with cool water.

Step 4

Stop smoking if you are a smoker. The repeated act of pursing your lips while smoking can cause fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth. What's more, smoking can also dehydrate your skin so it becomes more susceptible to daily damage. Smoking can even constrict blood vessels in your face thereby decreasing circulation. Smoking is one of the worse things you can do to the skin on your face, so it is best to quit immediately.

Step 5

Watch for changes in the skin on your face. Spots, dry patches, yellowing and other sudden changes could be the sign of an underlying medical problem that needs evaluation. See your dermatologist for a check up when you notice something different on your face.
