Oily facial skin is frequently found in teenagers, but it can also persist throughout adulthood. Menopause and pregnancy are other stages of life when oily skin is common. The greasy feel, excess shine and tendency toward breakouts that characterize oily facial skin come from an overproduction of sebum. Fortunately, a number of products can help correct the flaws of oily skin, leaving you looking healthy and beautiful.

Oil-Free Moisturizers

It may seem counterintuitive, but moisturizers are just as beneficial for oily skin as they are for dry skin. In fact, they are especially necessary if you use skin care products for acne. These products often contain drying agents such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, and while they may help heal your pimples, they can also cause your skin to become dry and flaky. The Mayo Clinic advises that those prone to oily facial skin choose water-based, oil-free moisturizers. Look for the word "noncomedogenic" on the label. It means that the product won't block pores. Many companies make oil-free, noncomedogenic moisturizers, including Clinique, Sephora and CoverGirl.

Salicylic Acid Spot Treatments

Dermatologist Dr. Amy Wechsler told "Marie Claire" magazine that people with oily facial skin should treat pimples with a salicylic acid spot treatment, and advised that salicylic acid spot treatments are better for oily skin than formulas containing benzoyl peroxide. Wechsler explained that benzoyl peroxide is more drying and can actually stimulate skin to produce extra sebum, leading to breakouts. Clear & Clean, Neutrogena and Nature's Gate are among the many skin care companies that make salicylic acid spot treatments. Look for a concentration of 2 percent.

Mineral Makeup

Wechsler advised that mineral makeup is best for oily facial skin because it's noncomedogenic. According to the website Paula's Choice, mineral makeup is basically a powder foundation, and not necessarily made from earth-based minerals. Bismuth oxychloride is the "mineral" in a number of brands, even though it is not found in nature. Instead, it is manufactured by combining bismuth with chloride. Mineral makeup benefits oily skin by having a matte finish and being more absorbent than liquid moisturizers. Mineral makeup often includes titanium dioxide, zinc oxide or both as sunscreens. Neither are likely to cause irritation, so look for those ingredients if your skin is both oily and sensitive. A few companies that have a mineral makeup line are Colorscience, L'Oreal and Bare Escentuals.
