Products for Dark Skin

If you have dark skin, you may be more susceptible to certain skin conditions, so taking care of your skin can be more challenging. People with dark skin can use most of the same products as light-skinned people, but there are many skin product lines manufactured especially for people of color. Always consult a dermatologist if you're having serious problems with your skin; prescription treatments are available for some severe issues.

Sunscreen

Though dark skin may not tan as visibly as light skin, damage from the sun's UV rays still occurs, leading to wrinkles and the possibility of skin cancer. Make sure to use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 whenever you will be out in the sun.

Hyperpigmentation

According to Dr. Susan Taylor, a dermatologist who specializes in dark skin problems, dark-skinned people are more susceptible to hyperpigmentation, or skin discoloration, in conjunction with acne. To help to minimize the effects of hyperpigmentation, look for products containing alpha-hydroxy acids or salicylic acid.

Eczema

Eczema, a condition of excessively dry skin, is also thought to be more common in dark-skinned people, according to Dr. Taylor. There are several prescription treatments, including antibiotics and antihistamines, but over-the-counter anti-itch creams may help for milder cases.

Makeup

If you have very dark skin, look for brands of makeup specially made for people of color. Modern Professional recommends buying high-quality makeup products that won't rub off easily, because darker shades show up more prominently on clothing and headwear.
