Problems With Blackheads Problems With Blackheads Problems With Blackheads

A blackhead is also called a comedone. It forms when oils and skin cells accumulate and harden. When these hardened oils and skin cells reach the skin's surface, they turn black due to interaction with the air. Blackheads are common if you have acne--but you can get blackheads without having an acne condition. These ugly black plugs can be bothersome and problematic.

Resistant to Removal

Some blackheads are easy to remove, while others may be harder to extract. Steaming and coaxing a blackhead often works, but some skin care practitioners will resort to using a metal comedone extractor when they can't easily remove a blackhead. The use of a metal comedone extractor can create enough force to make the walls in a follicle break open. When this happens, a mixture of sebum, keratin and bacteria leaks into the layer of skin beneath the epidermis and a pimple forms. Sometimes the pimple will kill the follicle and leave a scar on the skin.

Depression

Blackheads can cause a woman to become depressed, according to womenshealth.gov. She may think of herself as being unattractive if she has blackheads, and this may cause her to have a low opinion of herself. If blackheads are a symptom of an acne condition, the problem could last for a number of years. This can have a negative effect on a woman's life.

Side Effects of Prescribed Medicines

Accutane, or Isotretinoin, is a drug that may be prescribed if you have blackheads. According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, some of the side effects associated with taking this medicine are eye dryness, dry mouth and skin, itching, bleeding from the nose, aching muscles, sun sensitivity, problems seeing at night, an elevation of triglycerides and cholesterol, liver function changes, birth defects, mood swings, depression and suicide.
