If over-the-counter treatments for wrinkles or acne aren't enough, talk to your dermatologist about prescription strength options. There are a number of topical creams and ingested pills that you can use in your fight against these skin blemishes. Some work for both acne and wrinkles, while others are effective for one of the problems.

Tretinoin is a form of Vitamin A that is available in prescription topical creams. The Drugs website points out that Tretinoin is available in different forms. Some of these creams treat acne and others treat wrinkles. A doctor will prescribe Retin-A or Avita for acne treatments and Renova for wrinkle mollification.

Retin A Creams

Prescription grade creams that include Retin A are also used to fight wrinkles. Retin A is a modified form of vitamin that helps strip the top layers of the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Retin A can also help with problem like discoloration.

Oral Antibiotics

The American Academy of Dermatologists points to the essential role that prescription oral antibiotics play in treating cases of acne. These drugs target the bacteria that cause acne, and the successful use of the antibiotics can reduce breakouts and decrease inflammation. These drugs are usually prescribed for periods of less than six months, as the bacteria can become resistant if they are over used.

Prescription Strength Topical Acne Creams

Prescription strength topical creams are also an acne-fighting tool favored by the American Academy of Dermatologists. There are a number of cream varieties, including topical retinoids that unclog pores and topical antimicrobials that kill the bacteria that cause acne. Many of these creams contain the same ingredients available in over-the-counter medications, but in higher doses.
