Personal Acne Solutions
Your skin texture and type, along with acne, may be very different from that of your siblings or other relatives. Finding the right product or combination of products can help treat your specific skin type and acne. With so many options available, it will be helpful to learn as much as you can about what's out there in order to best distinguish which products will improve your skin.
Types of Acne
Identifying acne is the first step to a personal solution that right’s for your skin. The American Academy of Dermatology describes three types of acne, depending upon the type of inflammation you experience. The most common, according to the AAD, is blackheads and whiteheads. This type of acne has little inflammation. The next phase up is pimples. These form at your skin’s surface and are characterized by tender bumps, which are red in color. The most severe, according to the AAD, consists of cysts and nodules. Cysts and nodules have the most inflammation of all the types of acne, forming deep below skin tissue and often resulting in scarring.
Types of Skin
Your skin type will also factor into finding a personalized solution for your needs. According to CosmeticCop.com, there are three skin types. Oily skin is typically found in people with overactive oil glands. Those who suffer from dry skin may experience flaky skin, according to CosmeticCop.com. Combination skin, the trickiest of all according to CosmeticCop.com, is when you suffer from both oily and dry skin in areas often very close to each other. Combination skin is often marked by having an oily T-zone, consisting of your chin, nose and forehead, while the rest of your skin is dry, such as your cheeks, jaw line and areas around your eyes.
Cleansers consist of different active ingredients, such as benzoyl peroxide, alpha hydroxy acids, sulfur and salicylic acid. According to the Mayo Clinic, benzoyl peroxide works best for oily skin types, as it removes excess oil. Alpha hydroxy acids are geared toward sensitive or dry skin, since this active ingredient is a synthetic version of acids derived from fruits. Sulfur works well for combination skin, both oily and dry, when the cleanser contains two active ingredients such as sulfur and benzoyl peroxide or sulfur and salicylic acid. Salicylic acid, which is effective in breaking down whiteheads and blackheads, can work for all skin types, although it is known to cause dry skin.
Toners and Moisturizers
CosmeticCop.com states that toners work best as they effectively cleanse your skin, for all skin types. CosmeticCop.com recommends using a water or glycerin-based toner, as they deliver the most hydration to your skin and do not leave a slick or greasy feel. Using water-based moisturizers are also recommended by CosmeticCop.com, as they mimic natural skin unlike heavy creams.
Putting It All Together
For those who suffer from pimples, with oily or combination skin, benzoyl peroxide and sulfur medications work best. If you have pimples with dry or sensitive skin, alpha hydroxy acids are the route you want to choose. If you suffer from blackheads and whiteheads, no matter your skin type, salicylic acid is your answer. No matter your skin type, opt for oil-free, noncomedogenic or water-based products. These types of products will not cause your pores to clog and feel more natural than heavy, oily or greasy products.
