Overview

Named for dermatologist Dr. Nicholas Perricone, the Perricone Acne Diet is designed to reduce inflammation in the body that he believes contributes to acne breakouts. This inflammation is not a visible sign of acne, but inflammation on a cellular level that leads to multiple skin problems, including acne, wrinkles and sagging skin. The diet involves eating a significant amount of fish while avoiding sugar and yeast.

Three-Day Facelift

The Perricone Diet begins with the "Three-Day Facelift," a diet recommended to jump-start your way to healthy skin. After three days, Dr. Perricone claims puffiness and redness will diminish from your face. The diet involves eating lean protein sources like egg whites, grilled salmon and sliced chicken breast. Proteins should be eaten first, followed by fruits and vegetables like cantaloupe, romaine lettuce, green apples and fresh berries. This part of the diet involves eating three meals and two snacks per day.

Principles

From the three-day introductory period, the Perricone diet continues by suggesting foods that are low in the glycemic index. The glycemic index is a measure of how carbohydrates you eat impact your blood sugar levels. By eating foods low on the glycemic index, Dr. Perricone maintains you can reduce acne-causing inflammation in the body. Examples of low-glycemic index foods include yogurt, beans, sweet potatoes, buckwheat and amaranth. Low glycemic index foods are then supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables, which contain antioxidants that are inflammation fighters. Examples of foods include melons, spinach, acai and broccoli. Beverages are included as well. Dr. Perricone recommends drinking eight to 10 glasses of water per day to relieve acne-causing inflammation. Green tea is permitted as well.

Superfoods

Dr. Perricone has identified a number of superfoods packed with antioxidants that should be a part of your anti-acne diet. They include acai berry, barley, beans, lentils, buckwheat, green foods, hot peppers, nuts, seeds, sprouts, yogurt and kefir. Dr. Perricone finds these foods help repair cellular damage and protect your cells against future damage.

Foods to Avoid

Dr. Perricone recommends avoiding certain foods to prevent cellular inflammation. This includes white flour, such as bread, pasta and muffins. Sugar-containing foods, such as cookies, cakes and pies also contribute to inflammation. Dr. Perricone also recommends avoiding fruit juices, dried fruits, aged cheese, milk, soy, vinegar and mushrooms. You also should avoid alcohol whenever possible, drinking it only on rare occasions.
