Oxy Acne Drug

Overview

If you're a teenager, you probably have at least a little bit of acne. The skin condition afflicts close to 90 percent of adolescents each year, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Dermatologists should treat severe acne, but for most cases of common acne, nonprescription drug products should suffice to clear your skin. Many teens turn to Oxy acne products to help improve their complexions.

Causes

Acne originates in your skin's oil glands, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. Teens whose hormones have started to increase see these glands produce more oil than before, and this oil, if combined with dead skin cells, can plug hair follicles in acne-prone areas of your skin. Bacteria then contribute to skin irritation, and pimples begin to erupt.

Function

Oxy skin care products contain either the proven acne fighter benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, another well-established acne medication, as active ingredients. Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria that contributes to pimple formation, and also helps to clear out whiteheads and blackheads that block your pores, according to the AAD. Salicylic acid, meanwhile, can slow the irregular shedding of dead skin cells that help to clog your pores, and also can help unclog already-clogged pores.

Types

Oxy brand acne products fall into one of two product lines: Oxy Maximum and Oxy Clinical, according to the Mentholatum Company, which manufactures Oxy. Acne sufferers can purchase facial scrubs, face wash, cleansing pads, spot treatment, hydrating body wash and exfoliating body scrub under the Oxy brand name. The Oxy Maximum line contains Oxy products, versions of which have been sold for more than three decades, while Oxy Clinical includes newer formulations, according to the company.

Research

Research backs the use of both benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid to treat acne. In one study, performed by Dr. S. Biswas and colleagues and reported in the Journal of the Indian Medical Association in April 2009, the researchers compared benzoyl peroxide to topical antibiotics and tretinoin, two other acne treatments, and reported that it reduced whiteheads by 70 percent. In another study, led by Dr. R. Bissonnette and published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in March 2009, the research team compared benzoyl peroxide with a form of salicylic acid and found both reduced acne lesions about the same amount.

Considerations

Over-the-counter treatments don't work for everyone who has acne. In fact, the Mayo Clinic warns that these treatments, which include Oxy products, might only work well for mild acne. In addition, benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid both can cause skin irritation, reddening and even peeling, although these side effects often subside after the first month or so of treatment. Cutting back on the amount of product used might help if you experience these side effects.
