An inflammatory skin condition, acne occurs when the pores become clogged with bacteria and dead skin cells, which causes the appearance of pimples and blackheads. Although considered an adolescent problem, acne may also affect adults, although it usually subsides by age 30. Over-the-counter and prescription medications are widely available for treating acne, but home remedies may also provide some benefit when used consistently.

Baking Soda, Vinegar and Vitamin E

Baking soda may help cleanse the pores and reduce inflammation associated with acne. In her book “Jude's Herbal Home Remedies,” Jude C. Todd recommends using baking soda in conjunction with apple cider vinegar and vitamin E oil to create an effective overnight acne treatment. Make a thick paste by combining two parts baking soda and one part water. Apply the paste to the affected area and leave on for five minutes. Rinse off using apple cider vinegar, pat dry and apply a thin layer of vitamin E oil. Leave the oil on overnight and wash your skin thoroughly in the morning. Repeat nightly to treat and prevent acne breakouts.

Honey and Cinnamon

A combination of honey and cinnamon may help reduce acne by penetrating deep into the pores and drawing out impurities, according to Roshni Dayal in her book “Natural Beauty Secrets From India.” To make an overnight treatment, combine 2 tbsp. pure honey with 2 tsp. powdered cinnamon to form a thick paste. Apply the paste directly to the affected areas of skin and leave on overnight. Repeat the treatment every night for at least three weeks, or until your skin clears. You may experience a slight tingling sensation during the first few treatments, but this feeling subsides once you become accustomed to the cinnamon on your skin.


Turmeric contains antibacterial properties that make it an effective natural acne treatment. Diane Irons, author of “Bargain Beauty Secrets: Tips and Tricks for Looking Great and Feeling Fabulous,” suggests making an overnight acne mask using the herb. Mix one part turmeric powder with two parts water to make a thick paste, and apply it directly to blemishes. Leave the mask on overnight and rinse clean in the morning with lukewarm water. Repeat daily as needed.


Use of a clay mask at least once a week can help reduce the formation of blackheads and minimize acne breakouts, according to Stephanie Tourles in her book “Naturally Healthy Skin.” To make an overnight acne treatment mask, combine two to three drops tea tree essential oil with 2 tbsp. cosmetic clay and 4 tbsp. water. The tea tree oil has antibacterial properties that expedite the healing of blemishes. Apply the mask directly to the affected skin, leave it on overnight and rinse away in the morning with cool water.
