Folliculitis begins when one or more follicles of hair become inflamed, according to the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The inflammation can occur anywhere on the body. The NLM states that the inflammation is caused by friction from clothing, blockage of the follicle and shaving. Once the follicle has been damaged, it can become infected with staphylococcus bacteria. There are several ways to treat folliculitis, including over-the-counter options.

Calming Itchy Skin

Applying an oatmeal lotion or over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream can soothe itchy skin. The Mayo Clinic warns individuals with folliculitis to avoid spreading the infection by washing their hands with soap and water after touching the skin. Sharing towels or washcloths can also spread the infection to others.

Killing Bacteria or Fungus

The Mayo Clinic recommends antibacterial soap or an over-the-counter antibiotic cream. Wash the area daily and apply the antibiotic cream after each washing. The Mayo Clinic recommends using a new washcloth to wash the area and dry it off to prevent the bacteria from spreading. White vinegar can also kill the bacteria. When folliculitis is the result of fungus, an antifungal cream should be used. Distinguishing between the two should be done by a doctor.

Other Treatments

The Mayo Clinic recommends a warm, moist washcloth or compress can be applied to the area several times per day to relieve discomfort and drain the area. They also suggest avoiding anything that may irritate the skin, including shaving.
