Eczema is often referred to simply as dermatitis. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the most common type of eczema is atopic eczema, a skin disorder that results in thick, scaly patches of skin. The affected area may blister, weep or peel. Atopic eczema is an allergy-like reaction in the skin that causes the inflammation. Different types of the condition respond to medications with different ingredients. Soothing, healing creams are available over the counter, and they provide relief for the itching and dry skin.

Eucerin Original suggests that a first line of defense to prevent or treat early eczema is to use petroleum jelly to keep the skin supple and keep the condition from worsening. If the affected skin is dry and crusty, use a heavier, medicated skin cream like fragrance-free Eucerin Original.

Lubriderm Lotion

For broken skin or weepy blisters, try using a liquid lotion such as Lubriderm. A soft cloth soaked in cool water and applied to the area also provides relief. Allow the cool, wet cloth to lie on the skin for about 20 minutes at a time, up to six times a day. When you remove the cool cloth, the water evaporates from the skin and relieves the inflammation and itch. Apply lotion after the skin dries.

Benadryl, an antihistamine, may be taken orally as directed by your doctor, or Benadryl cream may be applied to the rash. The antihistamine can prevent infection by drying weepy areas as it relieves allergy-like itch and inflammation and speeds healing.

According to, Dermarest cream contains hydrocortisone, a topical steroid that works by limiting swelling, redness and inflammation reactions in the body. Apply a thin layer and rub it in. Leave the area uncovered, if possible. Using a bandage or covering can increase the amount of hydrocortisone that your body absorbs, which may cause side effects. Follow the instructions exactly, and do not use Dermarest longer than your doctor advises. Never use hydrocortisone cream on open sores or blistered or weepy skin, and keep it away from your eyes and mouth tissues.
