Everyone has sebaceous glands that secret sebum, the medical term for skin oil. Sebum protects the skin from dehydration and other environmental factors. However, some people produce too much oil, which causes skin to appear shiny. Excessive oil production is caused by genetics, hormonal changes, diet, some cosmetics and environmental factors, says Holistic Living. In addition to being embarrassing, oily skin can also lead to acne breakouts. Fortunately, there are certain over-the-counter products that can alleviate oily skin and prevent breakouts.

Face Wash

Many oil-control acne products contain salicylic acid. However, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, salicylic acid has no effect on sebum production. Instead, try Neutrogena Rapid Clear Oil Control Foaming Cleanser. This cleanser works to control oil while also removing dirt, oil, and makeup, which can clog pores.

When using any face wash, pour a small amount in your hand and rub gently over the face with luke-warm water. It's tempting to vigorously scrub oily skin, but according to the American Academy of Dermatology, doing that further aggravates the skin. The face wash is moderately priced and is found at most drug stores.

Moisturizer

Many people with oily skin choose to forgo moisturizer because they believe it will worsen their condition. However, even oily skin benefits from a good moisturizer. In fact, if skin is dry in some areas and oily in others, sebum production can be increased all around.

The key is to find a moisturizer that says oil-free or non-comedogenic, meaning that it won't clog pores. Try Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel, designed for "oily" and "very oily" skin types. It is moderately expensive. Clinique products are available at many department stores.

All-Day Shine Control

For people with really oily skin, an oil-control cleanser might not last all day. Dermalogica makes a Clearing Mattifer that is designed for all-day oil control. Apply it in the morning (it can go on under makeup) after washing your face.

The gel can be applied all over the face or just to oil-prone areas. It's relatively expensive and is available in salons and specialty stores. As an added bonus, the gel contains ingredients to smooth skin texture, reduce fine lines and calm inflammation.
