According to the American Academy of Dermatology, approximately 40 to 50 million Americans have acne or will develop the condition in their lifetime. Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. Teenagers are the most affected by acne, with 85 percent of the total teenage population having the condition. According to The Mayo Clinic, there are several names which can be used to refer to acne. However, as each one differs in name, it also differs in the type of acne present.

Zits

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, inflammation that occurs will determine what type of acne appears. Zits, to most, sound like the worst type of breakout possible. A zit will occur when the sebum flow to your skin is blocked deep within the hair follicle and a pustule develops. These will be pus filled and will be painful.

Pimples

The Mayo Clinic states that if the blockage occurs deeper within the skin, a papule, or pimple will form. Papules are small raised bumps that signal inflammation or infection in the hair follicle. They may be red and tender as well. Pimples may have a white center that will develop as well.

Blemishes

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, when the skin becomes slightly inflamed, this means that the sebum flow is blocked close to the skin's surface. The result of this blockage is a blackhead or whitehead, commonly referred to as a blemish. Your dermatologist may call this a comedo. This type of acne is not too severe and will usually go away in a matter of days.
