An overproduction of oil by the sebaceous glands in the skin causes oily skin. This overproduction may be caused by genetic or hormonal factors, or may result from chronic overstimulation of the skin by harsh soaps, frequent exfoliation or other sources. Oily skin can be difficult to care for and often goes hand in hand with acne. To reduce excess oil, prevent acne outbreaks and keep your foundation from sliding off of your face, it is essential to follow a skin-care regime designed specifically for oily skin.

Washing

Wash your face every morning and night with warm water and a gentle soap. You can try a product made specifically for oily skin, but in most cases, regular soap is sufficient to remove dirt and oil. Avoid washing your face more often than twice a day, as over-washing can remove the natural oil from your skin and stimulate your oil glands to produce even more oil. Follow each washing with an astringent, which will help remove remaining oil and soap residue while helping to close your pores. Enlarged pores are more common in those with oily skin, according to SkinCareRx, as the pores must accommodate a greater flow of oil and they may become stretched during acne outbreaks. Witch hazel is typically as effective as commercial astringents at just a fraction of the cost.

Combating Shine

Oily skin often appears shiny, especially on the brow, chin and around the nose. For many, shiny skin is a significant cosmetic concern. Using blotting tissues will help soak up excess oil throughout the day, and an application of cosmetic powder can minimize shine for several hours. These products are available at most pharmacies and retail stores.

Moisturizing

Moisturizer is not just for dry skin. All skin types can benefit from the use of an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer. Oily skin may feel dry after washing or using an astringent, and a thin application of moisturizer to dry areas is soothing to the skin. Dry skin will trigger an increase in oil production by the sebaceous glands and make oily skin worse over time.

Cosmetics

Avoid using oil-based cosmetics, as these may aggravate oily skin and increase acne. Water-based foundations labeled as non-comedogenic are generally better for oily skin types. Pressing blotting tissue against oily areas every few hours is beneficial if very oily skin interferes with makeup application or if makeup wears off too quickly. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying makeup after using acne medications. It is important to remove all cosmetics before going to bed at night.

Acne Treatment

Acne is a common problem for those with oily skin. Excess oil contributes to clogged pores and increases the frequency and severity of acne, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Many over-the-counter acne medications are available for use on oily skin. Products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid may be especially beneficial because, in addition to unclogging pores, they can have a drying effect on the skin. Spot treatments can be used on a daily basis, with more intensive washes used only as needed.
