Treating acne is hard enough, but contending with oily skin can be another challenge altogether. Even so, there are ways to treat acne on oily skin. You just have to take into account your skin's unique texture and excessive oil production when choosing products with which to fight your blemishes.

Benzoyl Peroxide

One of the most popular acne-fighting ingredients is benzoyl peroxide. It works by killing the bacteria that causes acne and soaking up excess oil. This is key for those with oily skin. However, it does have a tendency to dry out your skin and cause itchy, red patches, so take care to use the lowest concentration possible for your acne.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is included in many over-the-counter acne treatments and it works by helping the skin slough off dead skin cells faster so as to prevent clogged pores. It must be used continuously to be effective and can be helpful in regulating oily skin.

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is included in many chemical peels. You can get a low-concentration peel over-the-counter to apply once a week. This might burn and sting a bit, but it helps to peel away the top layer of skin faster, revealing fresher, healthier skin underneath and helping to prevent clogged pores.

Oil-Free Moisurizer

Even though your skin is oily, you'll still need a good moisturizer. An oil-free formula is best to give your skin proper hydration without a greasy finish.

Oil-Free Sunscreen

Sun protection is vital for healthy skin, regardless if you're oily or dry. However, you should use an oil-free formula of at least SPF 15 when going outside.
