Acne and oil have a close relationship. Most of your skin has glands that produce a lubricating oil called sebum. It is one of the main contributing factors to skin outbreaks. Certain oily products contribute to pimples, too. You can fight acne more effectively when you know how oil affects it and how you can minimize the problem.
Acne is a skin condition affecting about 17 million Americans, according to the Nemours Kids Health website. It happens when sebum blends with bacteria and dead skin cells. This mixture plugs up your skin pores and causes pimples to grow. Some are just inflamed bumps, while others fill up with pus. Facial skin is rich in oil glands so it is the most common location, but acne also appears occasionally on the neck, chest, back and arms.
Most acne sufferers are teenagers, although it can plague adults from early adulthood up to the senior years. Kids Health explains this is because puberty-related hormones stimulate the skin's oil glands to produce high amounts of sebum. The excess oil raises your chance of getting clogged pores, which lead to pimples. Some people associate acne with bad hygiene practices, but the Mayo Clinic warns that frequent or vigorous washing actually worsens pimples.
Benzoyl peroxide, the most popular ingredient in store-bought acne remedies, helps reduce excess oil production, according to Acne.com. It also clears dead skin cells from your pores. Salicylic acid, another common treatment ingredient, does not affect the oil directly at all. It works by dislodging the materials clogging your pores.
Female acne sufferers sometimes unknowingly make their acne worse with oily cosmetics and skin products. The added oil heightens your risk of plugged pores. Acne.com advises using makeup and other products labeled as water-based or noncomedogenic, which means they will not contribute to acne. All people with acne should refrain from face washing more than twice a day. Don't try to scrub away your oil, as that will inflame your pimples. Use mild soap applied gently with your hands, then rinse it off with plain warm water.
Many people believe oily foods like hamburgers and french fries worsen acne. The Mayo Clinic states that scientific research has never found a causal link between a greasy diet and acne outbreaks. You can eat almost any food when you have pimples without worrying about its effect, although some studies show starchy items like bread and potato chips might worsen it, according to the Mayo Clinic.
