Obagi Clenziderm & Acne
For two generations or more, teenagers and adults have used products with benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid to treat their pimples. The products, which generally can be purchased without a prescription, work well, often in combination, to treat mild to moderate acne, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Skin products manufacturer Obagi's Clenziderm systems include products with salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide to treat acne.
The National Institutes of Health says no one knows why people get acne, but hormones, genetics and certain medications all can play a role. In acne, excess oil made by the skin clogs the skin's pores, leading to blackheads, tiny pimples and whiteheads. Once these blockages form, bacteria often grows inside those pores, which infects them and creates zits.
Obagi's Clenziderm treatment uses benzoyl peroxide to dry the skin and to kill bacteria. The salicylic acid in Clenziderm, meanwhile, helps the skin clear pore blockages. The Clenziderm system designed for normal to oily skin comes in three separate parts: A cleansing face wash, pore therapy with salicylic acid, and serum gel with benzoyl peroxide. In the Clenziderm system for normal to dry skin, you'll receive the cleansing face wash, therapeutic lotion with benzoyl peroxide and therapeutic moisturizer. In each case, Obagi intends the three parts to be used together as an overall acne skin care system, according to the company website.
If you're using Clenziderm's system for normal to oily skin to treat your acne, you'll first cleanse your face with the foaming face wash, using a dime-sized dollop of the product and rubbing gently for at least 20 to 30 seconds. Once your face has dried off for about 15 minutes, you'll apply the salicylic acid-containing pore therapy, using a pad or a cotton ball. Don't rinse this off. Finally, once the pore therapy dries completely, you'll apply the serum gel, containing 5 percent benzoyl peroxide in a form designed to penetrate deeper into your skin.

Meanwhile, if you're using Clenziderm's system for normal to dry skin, you'll follow the same steps with the foaming cleanser. Next, you'll apply the therapeutic lotion, which contains 5 percent benzoyl peroxide. Let the medicated lotion absorb completely into your skin before applying the therapeutic moisturizer. The oil-free moisturizer aims to rehydrate your skin without promoting new pimples. The Clenziderm system for normal to dry skin does not include salicylic acid, which can irritate dry skin.
The Clenziderm system kits cost about $60 online for a month's supply, in many cases significantly more than other over-the-counter acne products. Many posters on the website Acne.org complained about the price but gave the products excellent reviews otherwise. Some people using the version for normal to oily skin complained that their skin peeled excessively or became too dry, but others said this dissipated within about a month and their skin began to clear after that.
