Noxzema Acne Treatment
Acne is a common problem that can develop from a variety of circumstances, including excess sebum oil production, irregular skin cell shedding, bacteria and inflammation. For less severe forms of acne, such as blackheads or whiteheads, an over-the-counter product, such as Noxzema, is typically strong enough to treat the acne breakout, and prevent future breakouts from occurring.
Noxzema has several products for acne treatment and prevention. These products include antiblemish pads, antibacterial lathering cleanser, antiblemish astringent and a blackhead cleanser. Each product addresses a different aspect of acne formation.
Noxzema works with two primary active ingredients: salicylic acid and triclosan. Salicylic acid is a keratolytic medicine used to break down comedones and prevent acne from forming in the follicle. Triclosan is an antimicrobial agent that can help fight off the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes, believed to be involved in acne formation.
The Noxzema blemish pads, astringent and blackhead cleanser function by using salicylic acid to break down the keratin in acne plugs. Keratin is a protein that largely makes up skin cells. Salicylic acid also works to prevent acne by slowing down the rate at which skin cells shed inside the follicles. The fewer shed cells in the follicle, the less matter sebum has to combine with to form acne plugs. The Noxzema antibacterial cleanser uses triclosan to kill the P. acnes bacteria on the surface of the skin and in the pores. Reducing the population of P. acnes helps reduce the possibilities of infection.
Noxzema products also contain eucalyptus, menthol and camphor in some of the acne treatment products. Eucalyptus is used as an antiseptic and disinfectant. Menthol is used for its cooling and soothing properties. Camphor is used as a topical analgesic--a painkiller.
The side effects of Noxzema products containing salicylic acid may include mild skin irritation, skin reddening or flushing of the skin. Products containing triclosan may cause eventual bacterial resistance to the product, but only if the directions are not followed and the product is overused. There is also a chance of allergic reaction to both salicylic acid and triclosan.
