Overview

Many acne sufferers use multiple over-the-counter products to combat pimples, and manufacturers have begun to tailor their offerings to meet this trend. Cosmetics and personal care products manufacturer Neutrogena offers its skin iD system, which customizes a three-part acne skin care system for each buyer based on a 20-question evaluation of that buyer's skin type, complexion and acne issues.

Acne

Acne occurs due to extra oil in your skin that blocks your pores in combination with dead skin cells, according to MayoClinic.com. Once your pores plug up, they can become infected with acne-causing bacteria, which causes additional inflammation and even a painful infection. It's not clear why your skin sometimes produces excess oil, but hormones likely play some role. Teens almost always suffer from acne due to their changing hormones, and women often get pimples right before their periods.

Function

Neutrogena's skin iD personalized acne solution provides a three-part system to treat pimples, according to the skin products manufacturer. Because everyone's skin is different, Neutrogena offers a number of components with different levels of active ingredients that can form more than 25 different combination regimens. As part of the program, you can post questions about your skin on a message board and receive answers from Neutrogena dermatologists.

Questionnaire

Neutrogena uses its 20-part questionnaire as the basis for its skin evaluation. The questions cover skin types, sun exposure, previous products used, age and makeup preferences. For example, an adult with dry skin might receive a recommendation for a kit that includes a cleanser, a moisturizer and medication containing benzoyl peroxide. Meanwhile, a teen with oily skin might receive a recommendation for a kit that includes a cleanser, a benzoyl peroxide treatment cream and treatment pads containing salicylic acid, another acne-fighting ingredient.

Reviews

Some skin iD reviewers on the website Acne.org note that it's possible to put together a regimen similar to those offered by Neutrogena by combining different over-the-counter products. However, the skin iD system generally received good reviews from acne sufferers who tried it. One month's supply of products, plus access to dermatologists via the Neutrogena message board, costs around $45.

Considerations

Over-the-counter acne treatments generally work well for mild acne, according to MayoClinic.com. Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, two ingredients found in Neutrogena's customized acne treatment system, hold proven records in fighting acne. However, if your acne is severe, they may not be adequate. If your acne fails to clear with over-the-counter treatments, consider visiting a dermatologist, who can prescribe more powerful prescription medications.
