Natural Ways to Remove Blackheads Natural Ways to Remove Blackheads

According to Medline Plus, blackheads--commonly referred to as a type of pimple known as open comedomes--are caused by a small blockage in a pore on the skin. Blackheads usually have a dark appearance, thus the name. Blackheads can be uncomfortable and embarrassing for people, but there are natural treatments that can help you quickly remove them. However, these remedies have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration for effectiveness, so talk to your doctor or dermatologist before trying any new treatments.

Epsom Salts and Iodine

According to Jethro Kloss, author of "Back to Eden: The Classic Guide to Herbal Medicine, Natural Foods, and Home Remedies Since 1939," a mixture of Epsom salts and iodine is a common remedy to help remove blackheads quickly. To use Epsom salts and iodine on the skin, mix 1 tsp. of Epsom salts with 4 drops of iodine and 1/4 cup of warm water. Stir the mixture thoroughly and dip a clean cotton ball or pad in the solution. Gently rub the soaked cotton on the skin and leave it on for 10 minutes. Rinse the skin with cool water and apply your regular moisture. Epsom salts and iodine should not be used more than three times a week, as it may cause some skin irritation if used more frequently.

Lime Juice, Lemon Juice and Wheat Germ

A mixture of lime juice, lemon juice and wheat germ is commonly used in Ayurvedic beauty care to rid the skin of blackheads and pimples according to Melanie A. Sachs, author of "Ayurvedic Beauty Care." To use lime juice, lemon juice and wheat germ on the skin, mix two tablespoons lime juice, one tablespoon lemon juice and three tablespoons wheat germ in a small container. Gently rub the mixture on the affected area for about 60 seconds and rinse the skin with cool water. Pat the skin dry and use your regular moisturizer. This treatment is best used at night, as the acid in the citrus juice can cause temporary redness. Lime juice, lemon juice and wheat germ can be applied to the skin daily as long as no irritation occurs.

Yogurt and Potatoes

A mixture of yogurt and potatoes is a common folk remedy for blackheads caused by excessive oil production, as the potatoes can absorb excess oil, while the yogurt helps to restore the natural moisture balance of your skin according to Melanie A. Sachs, author of "Ayurvedic Beauty Care." To use yogurt and potatoes on the skin, mix 2 tbsp. ground raw potatoes with 2 tbsp. of whole yogurt. Apply the mixture to the skin in a thin coat, and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse the skin with cool water and pat dry with a clean towel. There is no need to wash with soap or use a moisturizer after using yogurt and potatoes on the skin. This treatment can be applied daily as long as needed.
