Natural Soap for Acne

Natural Soap for Acne Natural Soap for Acne

Overview

Natural soaps vary in their ingredients, but most contain very little, if any, chemicals. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing your face once or twice a day with a mild cleanser to keep the pores clean. Not all natural soaps for acne are regulated, especially if soap makers who have not registered their businesses make them at home.

Features

Natural soaps are available in specialty stores, drugstores, online and at farmers markets. Often, natural soaps are made in smaller quantities compared to mass-produced soaps. The soap-maker will use saponified oils, lye or glycerin, and essential oils to make the soap. When making natural soap for acne, soap-makers will often include essential oils that are designed to help oily skin and to soothe irritated skin. Choosing a natural soap for acne may be better for your sensitive skin and less likely to cause further irritation.

Variations

Natural soaps come in bar or liquid forms. You can find unscented natural soaps as well as scented. Essential oils used as anti-inflammatory agents in soap include bergamot, eucalyptus, ginger, lemon, peppermint, rosemary, rosewood and tea tree. Antibacterial essential oils include clary sage, eucalyptus, lemon, sweet marjoram, rosewood and tea tree. The Mayo Clinic indicates that 5 percent tea tree oil may be beneficial in treating acne.

Benefits

Natural soaps designed to treat acne are formulated to be gently cleansing and soothing to skin. A natural soap with no irritating properties will help to keep your skin clean and prevent pores from being clogged if used twice a day. As mentioned by Dermalogica, an information center developed by the International Dermal Institute, some ingredients, such as fragrance and mineral oil, have the potential to make acne worse. By eliminating those ingredients and using a simple cleanser, you can more effectively treat acne.

Warnings

Just because something is labeled as natural does not make it so. Read the ingredients and discuss them with your dermatologist or naturopath. If you are buying natural acne soap from a farmers market or from someone who makes the soap at home, keep in mind there is no way of really knowing what is in the soap. Some natural soaps contain ingredients that may irritate your skin and make acne worse. If you buy natural soaps from someone who does not understand essential oil use, you may end up with a soap that will irritate your skin instead of making it better. Some people also have allergies to essential oils. If you notice your skin becoming irritated after trying a natural soap for acne, discontinue use and speak to your dermatologist or naturopathic physician.

Considerations

The guidelines on what composes a natural soap are not always clear nor followed by manufacturers. Natural soaps may even contain ingredients that are not natural and that may irritate your skin. Some ingredients may come from a natural source but may still be irritants. Before buying a natural soap for acne, check the ingredients to ensure they won't make acne worse. Dermalogica indicates the following ingredients may be problematic: lanolin, fragrance, D&C red pigments and mineral oil.
