Overview

Blackheads are common skin blemishes that develop in the pores of your skin and are visible on the surface. They can be embarrassing, because they are easily visible to other people. Although blackheads don't cause pain in most cases, they can be difficult to get out and a frustrating blemish to try and remove. Medications are available, but there are also some safe natural approaches you can take.

Definition

Blackheads develop when sebum produced by the skin enters the pores and develops a blockage, preventing oil or sweat from being excreted. This can cause inflammation in the location. Additionally, sebum appears white or semi-translucent at first, but when exposed to the air it turns black, taking on the color that gives blackheads their name.

Washing Your Skin

Washing your skin can get rid of some blackheads. The best method of washing your skin involves the use of warm water that will open your pores--do not use hot water, which can damage the skin. You can use a gentle soap without harsh chemicals--these natural alternatives don't dry out and damage the skin as easily. Wash and scrub with a soft cloth to agitate blackheads at the surface and clear them from your skin, but do not scrub so hard as to remove layers of skin.

Squeezing Method

Squeezing can be effective when done the right way, but it requires a gentle touch. Start by washing your skin and your hands, giving your skin about five minutes to open up the pores from the heat of the water. Using the finger pads of your index fingers, gently squeeze your skin to try to force out the blackheads. Only squeeze once or twice, gently--if nothing comes out, stop trying. Squeezing too hard or too long can cause bruising or other problems.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating can be done several different ways. It treats blackheads by using hard materials to clear away dead skin cells and blackhead tops. Loofah scrubs are a common way of doing this, as is sand. To exfoliate, rub an exfoliating material on your skin for a few seconds in each spot. The scrubbing should feel like you are gently scratching your skin. You should only exfoliate a couple times each week to avoid wearing away new skin.

Considerations

Many people do more harm than good to their skin by trying to vigorously remove blackheads. In some cases, it is difficult to safely remove blackheads without medications or professional treatment. You can also consider visiting a dermatologist and having individual blackheads removed with an extraction tool. This does not use pharmaceuticals or other chemicals, but it can be pricey.
