For mild acne, many people automatically reach for treatments with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, but you can often get similar results from natural acne remedies. If your breakouts are a serious or ongoing problem or if you don't see improvement in your acne within four to six weeks of using natural treatments, see a dermatologist—you may have serious acne that requires prescription-strength treatments.

Baking Soda Scrub

Substitute a mixture of baking soda and water for your usual exfoliating scrub, recommends the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. Just add water to baking soda gradually, stirring until the mixture forms a thick paste, and rub it on your face just as you would a commercially available exfoliant. Exfoliating helps scrub away dead skin cells that clog hair follicles, causing acne.

Tea Tree Spot Treatment

According to Anitra C. Carr, a research associate for the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, tea tree oil is as effective for spot treating acne as over-the-counter treatments with 5 percent benzoyl peroxide. Carr says tea tree oil is also less likely to irritate skin than benzoyl peroxide. Use tea tree oil just as you would any spot treatment: Dab it directly on existing blemishes to soothe and disinfect them.

Parsley-Mint Steam

Clean your pores of potential clogs and reduce your skin's oiliness by combining fresh parsley, mint, rosemary and sliced lemon to boiling water to make a facial steam, recommends Laurel Vukovic, author of the book "1,001 Natural Remedies," in "The Herb Companion" magazine. Tent your head over the resulting hot liquid with a large towel, and let your face steam for 10 minutes or so.

Egg White Mask

Reduce the appearance of red spots with a whipped egg white mask, recommends the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. If your acne shows up as bright red spots or leaves redness as it heals, egg whites may help restore evenness to your skin tone. Beat the egg whites until they are very white and fluffy, and apply the resulting mixture generously to your face until it dries and hardens.
