Overview

Aloe is a succulent plant that is native to Africa and the Middle East. It is easy to grow in pots and offers substantial relief to sensitive skin irritations including sunburns and rashes caused by allergies and insect bites. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, aloe has active compounds that work as anti-inflammatory and antiseptic agents and aloe helps repair skin damage. Aloe is a safe and common herb used to treat skin conditions; however, it is still recommended to consult your dermatologist before using herbal remedies to treat severe skin irritations or an ongoing condition.

Step 1

Purchase an aloe plant at your local health food store so you can receive the benefits of the fresh gel that comes from its cut leaves. Because aloe is a succulent, you will only need to water it once a week. It tolerates shade well.

Step 2

Wash the area of your skin that is irritated and pat dry.

Step 3

Cut the tip of an aloe leaf from your plant with a sharp knife. Make a slit in the leaf to open it fully and expose the gel.

Step 4

Scrape the gel off of the leaf and use your fingers to spread it onto the entire affected area of your skin. You can also apply it directly to the skin, without removing it from the leaf if the skin irritation covers a small area.

Step 5

Let the aloe gel dry off and bandage your skin with a gauze to keep it clean. This will also help the aloe gel soothe and heal your skin faster. Don´t rinse off the aloe gel.

Step 6

Re-apply aloe gel to your skin until it has healed. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, aloe can even be used to treat skin irritations such as eczema and psoriasis. Sensitive skin reacts well to its soothing qualities. According to the Purdue University, aloe acts as a moisturizing agent for your skin.
