Natural Products for Oily Skin

Natural Products for Oily Skin

Oily skin is not just a problem for teenagers--it can occur at any age. There are many ready-made products full of chemicals at your local drugstore, but that's not your only option. There are also natural products for oily skin that can be found at health stores. Or, you can combat oily skin by making your own natural products.

Natural Soap

Keep oily skin clean with soap. Look for something that is free of additives and contains oil; an oil-based soap will be best in dissolving the oil in your skin. Homemade soap allows you to know exactly what's going on your skin. Wash with any all-natural soap and hot water, massaging gently rather than rubbing your skin.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is extracted from the bark and leaves of the plant Hamamelis virginia. It is a natural product that is inexpensive and available in most drugstores. It acts as an astringent, absorbing excess oil from the skin. Witch hazel can dry out oily skin as well as alcohol, but it is not as irritating on the skin. Apply the liquid with a cotton ball where needed.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera, a plant used for its healing properties, is a great aid in natural care for oily skin. Look for products that contain aloe, aloe juice (made from the leaf) or make your own products from aloe vera. It improves the condition of the skin and, when used in gel form, can remove oil from the skin in the same way an astringent works. It is still effective if diluted.

Fruits and Vegetables

Some fruits and vegetables are effective when used in natural products for oily skin: apple juice; strawberries, crushed; cucumber; lime juice; grapefruit and tomato. When used in combination, these fruits and vegetables are especially effective as natural healers for oil skin. They also work well mixed with oatmeal or egg whites, two products that have a natural tightening effect when they dry.

Clay or Mud

Clay mask or mud masks are natural products for oily skin. Buy all natural mask kits or make your own using green clay powder mixed with honey. Leave the mask on your skin for about 15 minutes and when you rinse it off, it helps clear away excess oil. Follow with a mist of lavender to keep the skin oil free a bit longer.
