Acne is a common skin problem among teenagers and adults in the United States. Approximately 40 million Americans suffer from acne. There are plenty of medications that can be used to treat and prevent acne. Natural products are an option to fight off acne and they work effectively.

Witch Hazel

Many people who suffer from acne and oily skin use witch hazel to treat their conditions. All you need to do is rub a cotton ball saturated with witch hazel on your face and leave it on overnight or during the day. Witch hazel is a deciduous bush found throughout most of North America, according to Drugs.com. Brown fruit capsules come out after the flowers bloom. The dried twigs, leaf and bark are used medicinally. Witch hazel is an astringent, which means it will help to dry the skin and reduce the size of acne, according to Health911. It's best to use witch hazel right when you get up, as it will help in reducing the tone of acne blemishes.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide helps in fighting P. acnes, which is the bacterium that causes acne. Hair follicles become clogged when sebum is trapped. It helps in removing dead skin cells and stops comedones, also known as acne lesions, from forming. Benzoyl peroxide was one of the first agents to be effectively used in treating mild acne conditions and has been used for decades, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Continue to use benzoyl peroxide to stop new acne lesions from forming.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid works by correcting the abnormal shedding of the skin cells that may occur, treating the non-inflammatory acne lesions and helping to unclog pores so that acne lesions do not form. Salicylic acid is a white crystalline compound that comes from the bark of birch trees, according to a 1998 article in Experimental Organic Chemistry by J.R. Mohrig, et al. Salicylic acid itself does not have any effect on sebum production or P. acnes. You must continuously use salicylic acid or it will stop working, and clogged pores with acne will return.
