Many Americans, particularly teenagers and young adults, are plagued by acne, which is also referred to as acne vulgaris. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, between 40 and 50 million Americans suffer from acne. Acne is a condition that is caused by excessive oil production, clogged pores, bacteria and inflammation. Although acne can often be successfully treated with prescription medication, you may also benefit from using certain natural home remedies. Always consult your doctor before using any herbal or home treatment.

Honey

Honey is a natural healing remedy for acne that may also help prevent blemishes and heal acne scars. According to natural beauty expert Janice Cox in her book, "Natural Beauty for All Seasons," pressing a cotton ball soaked in salt water on blemishes and breakouts for three minutes and then applying a dab of honey to the affected area is a way to help clear your skin. Honey can also be used as a homemade acne mask due to its natural antibacterial properties. According to aromatherapist Jeanne Rose in her book, "Herbal Body Book," a paste made with fresh sage or clover honey and mashed peaches makes a healing acne mask that can be used on your face as well as your body.

Aloe Vera

According to the Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the gel of the aloe vera plant has traditionally been used to heal wounds and scars. According to Rose, aloe also is a helpful ingredient in home remedies to fight acne and blemishes. Rose suggests using a blend of almond meal, a cold-pressed oil such as olive oil, and aloe gel, which you can obtain from the leaves of the aloe plant by cutting off the tips and squeezing, to make a homemade acne-fighting mask. Additionally, aloe is a useful remedy for healing acne scars according to homeopath Norman Jollyman in his book, "My Practice of Homeopathy."

Lavender

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, lavender is a healing herb used in traditional herbal medicine to treat acne. Lavender in its essential oil and dried herb forms are commonly used in homemade acne treatments. According to author Rose, distilled lavender water made from dried lavender leaves is a useful antiseptic treatment that can be swabbed directly onto affected areas using a cotton ball. Lavender essential oil can be combined with tea tree oil to make a healing application for existing blemishes. Rose also recommends steaming your face with a mixture of dried lavender, licorice and comfrey root, which can help clear up blemishes and oily skin.
