Natural Face Wash for Acne
Unfortunately, acne is a common problem experienced by many people, especially teenagers. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), 85 percent of teenagers are affected by acne each year, although anyone can develop acne. Luckily, acne doesn't have to control your life. Maintaining a proper skin care routine and washing your face with natural face washes may help to alleviate or prevent some cases of acne.
According to Acne.org, there are several types of acne. Whiteheads, blackheads, papules and pustules are some of the more common and less severe forms of acne. More severe types of acne include severe acne vulgaris, which manifests in cysts and nodules, pyoderma faciale, a form of acne that affects females only, gram-negative folliculitis, characterized by cysts and pustules and acne conglobata, the most severe form of acne that is most common in males.
If you suffer from severe acne, you should consult a dermatologist. According to the AAD, your dermatologist can offer you several types of effective treatments, including topical medications, such as gels or creams and oral antibiotics. Your doctor can help to determine the best form of treatment for you.
Homemade Acne Face Washes
Some acne sufferers may find natural face washes to be an effective supplement to their pre-existing acne prevention and face care routine. According to author Narine Nikogosian in her book, "Return to Beauty: Old-World Recipes for Great Radiant Skin," you can make a homemade anti-acne face wash by mixing 1/4 cup warm water, 1 tsp. baking soda and 1 tsp. lemon juice. These ingredients are said to have pore-cleansing and tightening properties. In their book, "A Woman's Complete Guide to Natural Health," authors Lynne Paige Walker and Ellen Hodgson Brown recommend washing acne-prone skin with a paste of oatmeal and water. You may need to experiment with several recipes to find one that works for your skin. You can find many homemade anti-acne face wash recipes online or in natural beauty care books.
Commercially Prepared Natural Face Washes
Some companies produce natural or organic anti-acne face washes, in light of recent beauty trends toward avoiding harsh chemicals and preservatives. According to authors Walker and Brown, commercially prepared natural anti-acne face washes containing aloe can be effective. You can also purchase natural acne face washes containing tea tree essential oil in most grocery and drug stores. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, tea tree essential oil may help to reduce the symptoms and improve the appearance of acne-prone skin.
