Overview

Thick patches of hard, dead skin on the bottom of your feet are known as calluses. These dry patches of skin can be rough, itchy and unsightly. By paying attention to your feet and devoting a few minutes each day to giving yourself a home pedicure, you can remove your rough calluses naturally. All you need to make your feet soft again are a few pedicure tools and lots of elbow grease.

Remove Calluses

Step 1

Soak your feet in chamomile tea. The Women Fitness website recommends soaking callused feet in diluted chamomile tea to soften and dissolve hardened skin. The tea may stain your skin, but you can remove any tea stains easily later with soap and water.

Step 2

Soak stubborn calluses in a mixture of witch hazel, oil of wintergreen and black walnut oil. The Women Fitness website suggests repeating this soak daily for the best effects. You can find all of these ingredients at a health food store or natural grocer.

Step 3

Use a foot file or pumice stone daily in the shower. "Ladies Home Journal" magazine suggests rubbing calluses away using a foot file to sand down your hardened skin. Use the file towards the end of the shower, when your feet have been softened by the warm water. "Women's Health" magazine suggests filing your feet until the skin turns pink for best results.

Step 4

Apply an intensive moisturizer directly after showering. Find a hand or foot cream that exfoliates and moisturizes and apply the cream to your feet after showering and before bed every night. Wear socks over your feet at night to help your skin absorb the moisturizer.

Prevent Calluses

Step 1

Wear comfortable shoes that fit properly. Ladies Home Journal states that shoes that are too big or too small can rub your skin and cause calluses. Have your feet measured when you go shoe shopping.

Step 2

Change your shoes frequently. Wearing the same pair of shoes every day can lead to calluses, according to "Ladies Home Journal." Open-toed sandals are especially likely to cause your feet to develop calluses, so wear some enclosed tennis shoes with socks every few days to give your feet a break.

Step 3

Wear shoes that breathe. Shoes made from natural materials, such as leather, allow more air flow to your feet than shoes made from synthetic materials.
