Natural Acne Treatment & Pregnancy
Acne can develop or worsen during pregnancy, but some prescription medications can cause birth defects and are not safe to take. Although you may be tempted to try anything natural in order to get rid of the acne, be advised that many natural treatments are not effective. In fact, Skin Care Physicians states that many products that claim to be natural or herbal have not been tested for effectiveness. There are some natural ways to help treat acne during pregnancy, but always ask your doctor before trying any type of treatment.
Acne in Pregnancy
During pregnancy, your hormones produce more oil than usual. This causes your pores to become clogged and bacteria to develop, resulting in red bumps, whiteheads or blackheads on the skin. Acne can occur anytime during a pregnancy and can range from mild to severe.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is a natural product made from distilling leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant. Dermatologist Lawrence E. Gibson, M.D. states on MayoClinic.com that a 5 percent strength tea tree oil gel may be as effective as benzoyl peroxide in treating acne. However, Medline Plus states that there is not enough scientific information to determine whether or not topical use of tea tree oil is safe during pregnancy. Ask a doctor before using this method to be sure that it is safe for you.
Zinc benefits the body in many ways. It helps the functioning of your DNA and can also help reduce inflammation, reducing the appearance of acne. Babycenter states that during pregnancy, you need 11 milligrams of zinc daily. You can take zinc supplements or look to see if zinc is included in your daily prenatal vitamin. You can also find zinc in foods, such as red meat, turkey, tofu and fortified cereal.
Glycolic acid is a natural acne treatment. It is naturally found in sugar cane and is considered an alpha hydroxy acid. It works to remove dead skin cells and help unclog your pores, which can reduce the buildup that causes acne. Glycolic acid is safe to use during pregnancy, so look for over-the-counter face wash or cream that contains it.
Babycenter recommends taking some steps at home to reduce acne naturally. Wash your face with a mild cleanser twice a day. Wash gently to avoid irritating your skin and pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Choose oil-free moisturizer and makeup that won't further clog your pores.
