Acne, an inflammatory skin condition, occurs when the hair follicles and pores become clogged with excess oil, dead skin cells and, in some cases, bacteria. The most common skin disease in the United States, acne affects more than 17 million people, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Acne appears most frequently in teenagers, although it can occur at any age. Prescription drugs and topical treatments help reduce acne symptoms, but several natural acne remedies may also provide relief. Always talk to your doctor before using natural remedies, however, especially if you currently take prescription medications.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil, a natural antibacterial agent, may reduce bacteria and improve acne symptoms when applied to the skin. One study, published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology in 2007, found that patients treated with a 5 percent tea tree oil gel experienced significant improvement over a period of 45 days compared to patients treated with placebos. Researchers concluded that tea tree oil was an effective and well-tolerated natural treatment for acne vulgaris. For the best results, purchase a product containing 5 to 15 percent tea tree oil and use according to the manufacturer's instructions, or make your own treatment by diluting five drops of tea tree oil in 1/2 tsp. raw honey. Apply the mixture directly to blemishes and leave overnight.

Thyme

Thyme, an astringent herb, may help clear acne breakouts and prevent them from recurring when used daily in a facial rinse, according to Jude C. Todd in her book "Jude's Herbal Home Remedies." Thyme helps remove excess oil from the skin, which often contributes to the formation of blemishes. Pour 1 1/2 cups boiling water over 3 tsp. dried thyme and allow the mixture to steep for 30 minutes. Strain the herbs from the liquid and use the resulting tea to rinse the face once or twice daily after washing with a mild cleanser. Keep the tea refrigerated for up to three days before making a fresh batch.

Witch Hazel

An antibacterial and anti-inflammatory herb, witch hazel may help treat and prevent acne when used topically. Phyllis A. Balch, author of "Prescription for Herbal Healing," recommends using 86 percent witch hazel extract in 14 percent alcohol, found at drugstores and health food stores, for treating acne. For the best results, soak a cotton ball in the witch hazel extract and apply directly to the affected areas after washing with a mild cleanser and patting the skin dry. Repeat once or twice daily, as necessary, to get rid of acne.

Strawberry Leaves

Strawberry leaves may help dry the skin and reduce excess oil because of their mild astringent properties. This makes them a good choice for treating acne breakouts, according to Cindy L.A. Jones in her book "Herbs for Healthy Skin." Make a strawberry leaf acne treatment by steeping 2 tsp. dried strawberry leaves in 1 cup boiling water for 20 to 30 minutes. Strain the leaves from the liquid, and then use as a face rinse once or twice a day just after washing with a gentle cleanser.
