Acne is a common skin disease that affects people of all ages. It appears when sebaceous oil mixes with naturally occurring bacteria in a clogged pore, resulting in pimples, blackheads and whiteheads. Although acne is not a serious condition, it often causes severe emotional anguish and facial scarring, reports the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

Using natural acne methods can help relieve symptoms and promote healthy skin without the detriments of harsh chemicals often present in commercial products. Consult your doctor prior to beginning a new health regimen.

Daily Natural Skin Care

A skin-care regimen is crucial in controlling and preventing acne. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics reports that 80 percent of personal care products contain ingredients with hazardous impurities. By using natural ingredients that you can easily find within the home, you can implement a daily regimen conducive to acne-free skin.

To create a natural, yet effective, facial cleanser, combine 1 tbsp. of olive oil with 2 tbsps. of brown sugar in a bowl. Apply to the face in an upward, circular motion to lift and eliminate dead skin cells that can accumulate on the skin’s surface and cause acne. Rinse with warm water.

Follow with a natural witch hazel toner that helps refine the pores while providing essential moisture without the drying effects of alcohol. If extra moisture is needed, apply a small amount of vitamin E or olive oil to the skin. These items are rich in antioxidants and promote cellular restoration due to acne--even on oily skin.

Weekly Deep-Pore Cleansing

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found that 56 percent of skin products contain enhanced penetrators that deliver impurities deep within the skin. Many topical cleansers cannot reach beneath the epidermis, which requires deep-pore cleansing methods to eliminate impurities and debris that can accumulate and cause acne.

The simplest deep-pore cleansing method is steaming your face and sweating away impurities. Boil a pot of water along with three to four drops of lavender, thyme or tea tree essential oils. These oils are naturally anti-microbial, which inhibits bacterial proliferation while providing a fragrant experience. Place the pot of water on a table or flat surface that you can stand or sit over. Wrap a towel around your head and the pot and steam your face for approximately five minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and follow with your regular skin cleanser to wash away debris.

Regulate Your Diet

The Acne Resource Organization acknowledges that chemicals released during metabolism play a significant role in the development of acne. Diet itself does not cause acne, but foods that impair the digestive system cause breakouts and inflame existing acne. This is due to toxins not properly eliminated from the body and excreted through the skin. By eating a diet rich in fiber, you can effectively regulate your diet and keep acne at bay.

The Center for Young Women’s Health recommends eating dark green, leafy vegetables for their essential fiber content. Arugula, spinach, baby romaine, collard greens and chard deliver healthy amounts of fiber to flush away toxins and promote healthy skin. These greens are also high in antioxidants and additional minerals, which protect the skin from free-radical damage that can aggravate the skin.
