Murad is a skin-care company that manufactures beauty products for acne, antiaging, cellulite and other cosmetic conditions. Its acne line -- which includes the Acne Complex kit, individual cleansers, toners and washes -- are designed using a trademarked formula called "cellular water." Products are scientifically proven to address all of the issues associated with breakouts. The site boasts that 92 percent of users see a reduction of acne breakouts in three days.

About the Line

Murad Acne Complex kits are a three-step treatment regimen that includes a clarifying cleanser, exfoliating gel and a skin lotion. You can also purchase individual products including items from the kits, a clarifying toner, a time-release acne cleanser, body wash, wrinkle and acne reducer, spot-treatment cream, dietary supplements, body spray, as well as acne prevention, treatment and after-care products.

Acne-Fighting Ingredients

The active ingredient in Murad's cleansing and toning line, clarifying skin cleansers, timed-release cleanser and acne body wash is salicylic acid. Salicylic acid helps treat acne by slowing skin cells from shedding inside the pore. Each product delivers a different dose of salicylic acid ranging between 0.5 and 1.5 percent. The active ingredient in the Acne & Wrinkle Reducers, the gentle treatment gel and exfoliating gel is also varying doses of salicylic acid. The active ingredient in Acne Spot Treatment and the clarifying mask is sulfur. Sulfur is an over-the-counter acne medication often used in combination with other medications. It works by removing dead skin cells that clog pores and also removes excess oil.

Symptom Treatment

Murad offers a variety of products that treat acne symptoms, including hyperpigmentation, inflammation and irritation. The active ingredient in the treatment concealers is 2 percent salicylic acid. So this product will help fight acne breakouts, as well as conceal reddened lesions. The post-acne lightening gel is for pimples that leave behind a dark spot. The active ingredient is 2 percent hydroquinone, a topical bleaching agent.

According to Consumer Reports, Americans spend nearly $34 billion each year on alternative medicine, including vitamins and supplements. Murad attempts to join in with its own skin-clarifying supplements, many of which go above and beyond the Institute of Medicine's recommended daily allowance of a variety of vitamins. At 5,000 international units, or IU, vitamin A helps cells reproduce and keeps skin healthy, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. According to the Institute of Medicine, the RDA for vitamin A is 3,000 IU for adults. At 25 mg, niacin, or vitamin B3, is one of eight B vitamins necessary for healthy skin. The RDA for niacin, according to the Linus Pauling Institute, is between 14 and 16 mg for adults. At 8 mg, zinc is an essential mineral that helps protect cells from free radical damage. The RDA of zinc for adults is between 8 and 11 mg.

Murad's main source of pride is its trademarked "Science of Cellular Water." Cellular Water is based on the concept that to have healthy skin, cell membranes need to hold water within the cell. Murad's products and supplements have ingredients that strive to maintain cell health and protect against environmental damage, dehydration and aging.
