When the skin on your face is dry and flaky, you may try using commercially produced creams and lotions to help soothe your skin condition. However, commercial skin products can sometimes contain chemical ingredients that cause irritation in individuals with highly sensitive skin. One solution is to use natural substances to ease dry, flaky skin, such as milk and honey.

Milk and honey both contain properties that are beneficial to dry and flaking skin. When combined, milk and honey are highly antimicrobial, antibacterial and are deeply cleansing on the skin. Honey is rich in antioxidants and is considered a humectant. This means that honey can help fight off free radicals that are attacking the skin, while helping the skin maintain higher moisture levels.

Methods of Application

Milk and honey can be combined to create a cleanser or a mask, depending on your preferred method of application. The cleanser will remove flakiness, while the mask will deeply hydrate dry skin. Make a cleanser by combining 1/2 cup of plain, unflavored and unsweetened yogurt with 1/2 cup of honey. Mix the two ingredients well with a whisk, then massage it onto your skin for two minutes. Rinse the milk and honey cleanser off with warm water. Make a mask by combining 1 tbsp. of plain, unsweetened and unflavored yogurt with 1 tbsp. of honey. Spread the mixture onto your face and allow it to remain on your skin for 15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

It is important to consider which type of milk and honey you want to use on your skin. Milk that is not organic may contain residual hormones that were given to the dairy cows during milking. These hormones are not found in organic milk, which is produced from cows that are not given any added hormones. Honey that is collected locally will have minute particulates of local pollen. Using local honey can sometimes help reduce seasonal allergies.

If you experience stinging, burning, swelling or itching on your skin when using milk and honey as a cleanser or mask, discontinue their use and contact your doctor before reusing them. You may have an allergy to the lactose or casein in the milk. If a milk allergy does exist, you can use honey as a cleanser or mask on its own.
