Overview

Milk and milk products are a common elements of western diets. Despite their nutritional benefits, such as being vital for strong bones and overall healthy growth, research shows that they may cause acne breakouts or make them worse. Cutting back on or eliminating these foods may help improve your acne. However, it may take up to six months before you notice any visible benefits to your skin.

An Emerging Perspective

For years dermatologists have denied any possible link between diet and acne. However, a new perspective is emerging since researchers discovered that acne is extremely rare among some tribes living in remote jungles. Their diets typically do not include dairy, beef, wheat or sugar --- foods that are staples in western diets.

Milk and Hormones

According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, most dairy cows are pregnant at any one time, which means milk and dairy products have high levels of naturally occurring hormones. Farmers also give dairy cows the hormone rbGH to increase milk production and profitability. More research is needed to determine the effects these hormones in milk have on humans. However, some doctors believe they can disrupt hormonal activity and trigger excess oil production in the skin, making acne worse, notes the AOCD.

Evidence

Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health used data from the Nurses Health Study II to determine if consuming dairy foods during the high school years was linked to severe teenage acne. The data, based on questionnaires filled out by more than 47,000 women, revealed that whole milk and skim milk were linked to acne. Other dairy foods such as sherbet, cottage cheese and cream cheese were also positively associated with acne. The researchers suggested that hormones and other biological substances in milk played a role in acne.

Milk Alternatives

Limiting your intake of dairy foods may raise concerns of deficiencies in some of the essential nutrients they provide, such as calcium and protein. However, soy is a common substitute for milk and is a rich source of protein. You can buy soy and rice beverage fortified with calcium. Other good sources of protein include fish, whole grains and beans. For additional calcium, add foods such as fish with small bones like sardines or canned salmon to your diet, as well as green leafy vegetables. Otherwise, speak to your doctor about taking a calcium supplement and for more advice on changing your diet to improve acne.
