Acne is the most common skin disorder in the United States, according to Rutgers University, affecting people of all ages and skin types. Don't let whiteheads and blackheads ruin your complexion. A combination of methods, including lifestyle changes and the use of over-the-counter or prescription topical medications, can help zap your zits and restore your skin's naturally clear, radiant look.

Step 1

Wash your skin twice a day. This helps clear your pores of clogging oil, dirt and debris, helping to get rid of very mild acne and prevent new acne from appearing. Use a mild cleanser, recommends the University of Maryland Medical Center, and avoid using harsh detergents, scrubbing movement or facial masks, as such practices will irritate your skin and worsen your acne.

Step 2

Smooth on a topical over-the-counter acne serum or cream if simply keeping your skin clean doesn't clear away your pimples. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests using any acne-targeting product that's made with salicylic acid--the acid gently exfoliates your skin and keeps your pores clear--or benzoyl peroxide, which kills the acne bacteria.

Step 3

Switch out any cosmetic makeups or skincare products that you use for products that are labeled as "non-acnegenic" or "non-comedogenic," advises the Nemours Foundation. Such labeling means the product won't clog your pores, which is a common underlying cause of pimples.

Step 4

Ask your dermatologist for prescription-strength topical acne treatments if your acne doesn't disappear after eight weeks of over-the-counter treatment. Effective prescription topicals include retinol creams or extra-strength benzoyl peroxide, according to Rutgers University.
