The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases describe acne as a disease of the pilosebaceous units. Consisting of a sebaceous gland and hair follicle, oil secretion empties onto the skin surface through the pore. Acne develops when this pore is clogged, in which oil mixes with natural skin bacteria, creating unsightly lesions and blemishes. Although acne currently lacks a cure, using natural facial masks for your skin type is an effective acne treatment that can prevent flare-ups and irritation.

Acne-Prone Combination Skin

The American Academy of Dermatology defines combination acne-prone skin as having areas that are both dry and oily. Generally, the forehead, nose or chin is oily with dry cheeks. Combination skin often makes skin regimens difficult as certain products help to minimize oil but exacerbate dryness.

For a well-rounded facial mask for combination skin, combine dry oatmeal with unpasteurized honey in a bowl. Mix until the honey is uniformly distributed and apply to the face for 20 minutes. Use this mask at least once a week but no more than three times. The oatmeal helps to reduce oil while maintaining moisture levels in the skin.

Acne-Prone Dry Skin

Commercial facial masks are detrimental to dry skin, as they contain harsh acids that can cause excess dryness and flaking. Dry skin tends to feel tight and may only need cleansing once a day depending on severity, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

For a simple once-a-week natural face mask, combine 1/2 cup grated cucumber, 2 tbsp. of instant nonfat dried milk and 1 tbsp. of plain yogurt. Whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl and apply liberally to the face. Let stand for 15 minutes or until dry. Rinse with warm water followed by cold water to close the pore. The yogurt mask causes your skin tissue to expand while the cucumber soothes irritated skin. The milk helps to minimize pores and reduce sebaceous secretions.

Acne-Prone Oily Skin

Oily skin is most prevalent in teenagers and certain adults and requires extra care when treating acne. For example, acne sufferers with oily skin may need to wash their face as much as three times a day, reports the American Academy of Dermatology. Using an oil-free and oil-absorbing facial mask helps to prevent breakouts and facilitate healing.

Mash or puree one tomato until it is of uniform consistency. Apply a thin layer onto the face and let it dry for 15 minutes. The tomato is a natural oil absorber and leaves the skin feeling clean without dryness or added oil.

Acne-Prone Mature Skin

It is a common misconception that acne only applies to teenager and young adults. However, individuals at a mature age experience acne due to menstrual periods, pregnancy, work-related stress and birth control, asserts the Acne Resource Center. Mature skin has a unique need as treatment should aid and prevent premature aging and wrinkles as well as soothe acne.

Combine 3 tbsp. of sugar in 4 tbsp. of warm water with fresh mint. Leave the mask on for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse with warm water. The sugar and warm water help to soften fine lines, while the fresh mint is a natural antiseptic.

Acne-Prone Sensitive Skin

Individuals with sensitive skin tend to experience blotchiness, redness, dehydration and sensitivity to chemicals. Those with acne are doubly sensitive to irritations that can inflame current breakouts as well as the lower skin layers. Using natural ingredients that are hypoallergenic and noncomedogenic helps to gently heal acne and promote healthy skin.

In a microwave or over the stove, warm 2 tbsp. of honey and 5 drops of lavender oil. Honey is very gentle on the skin and helps to clear pores upon drying. Lavender is a natural antibacterial. Consider using tea tree oil or thyme oil for a different fragrance but with the same cleansing properties. Apply the warm mask to the face for 10 minutes and then wipe off with a warm cloth.
