A report published in the December, 2002 issues of Archives of Dermatology reveals that the root cause of acne may be the consumption of foods rich in carbohydrates specially of having high glycemic index. These foods not only cause acne, but they have been leading factors of obesity, high cholesterol levels and stress.

What is low glycemic diet?
Carbohydrates are ranked on the basis of their effects and influence on blood glucose levels. Low glycemic diet produce small fluctuation in your glucose level while high glycemic diet produces large fluctuation. Each type of carbohydrates has its own GI (Glycemic Index). The lower the index, the more favorable diet it will be for acne sufferers to prevent from acne.

How does high glycemic diet cause acne?
High glycemic index diet triggers the pancreas to produce excessive insulin. Insulin regulates body sugar levels by transferring the sugar from the blood to the cells where it can be utilized for energy generation. Excessive insulin and insulin like growth factors causes overproduction of testosterone, the male sex hormone found in both genders. Excessive testosterone results in excessive production of sebum. Uncontrolled production of sebum causes blockage and inflammation of hair follicles. When hair follicles are clogged and sebum is continuously being produced, it ruptures the walls of hair follicles.

Following foods are high glycemic and eating these foods can potentially increase the risks of getting acne breakouts.

  • Baked white potato
  • Parsnips

The western diet consists of around 60% of high glycemic carbohydrates that rapidly increase the production of insulin, testosterone and sebum. Excessive production of sebum results in clogged, infected and inflamed hair follicles.

Milk although falls under medium glycemic indexed dietary substance, studies show that it is one of the leading causes of acne breakouts.

Most of the daily western diet consists of high glycemic diet. Diet rich in carbohydrates having high GI has been proved to cause acne. Avoiding high glycemic diet is necessary while you are using natural acne remedies.
