List of Migraine Trigger Foods
Migraine headaches are severe, debilitating headaches that are often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Migraines are also characterized by extreme sensitivity to bright lights and loud sounds. There are a number of causes of migraine headaches, including stress, overexertion, hormonal changes and sleep disturbances. There are a number of foods that are also common triggers of migraine headaches.
Caffeinated beverages (and foods too) can often trigger migraines if consumed in large quantities. Alcoholic drinks, particularly red wine (because of the chemical tyramine), are also frequent triggers for migraine headaches.
Processed meats and cheeses contain nitrates, which are known to trigger migraine headaches. Stay away from deli and lunch meats, processed cheese, hot dogs, bacon and salami, says the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
A number of desserts and baked goods, like cookies, cupcakes and pies, can trigger migraines. Chocolate is another common culprit to stay away from if you suffer from migraines.
Dairy Foods and Fruits
Milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream--all dairy products--are known to trigger migraines. Avoid any diary products or foods made with dairy products to help prevent migraine headaches.
Some fruits are even known to cause migraines, specifically citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruits, lemons) avocados and bananas, says the NLM.
Any foods that contain the chemical monosodium glutamate, or MSG, are likely to cause migraines. Peanut butter and nuts, as well as onions, are also recognized as common migraine triggers.
What you don't eat is nearly as big a factor as what you do eat when it comes to migraine triggers. Not eating frequently enough and missing meals and snacks can also lead to migraine headaches.
