List of Gout Triggering Foods
Gout is a form of arthritis that can cause intense pain in your joints, particularly in your toes. This condition can also cause swelling, redness and fever. Gout is caused by a buildup of uric acid in your bloodstream -- this acid crystallizes in your joints. Consuming certain foods may trigger gout attacks, and reducing your intake of these foods may help prevent the symptoms of gout. Talk to your doctor before changing your diet to address gout symptoms.
Purines are substances found in meats such as shellfish, beef, poultry, anchovies, liver, mackerel, herring and mussels. They are also found in plant-based foods such as spinach, mushrooms, asparagus, peas and lentils, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Your body produces uric acid when it breaks down purines in these foods. This may increase your risk of developing gout, and may cause recurring gout attacks.
Avoid using oils for frying or cooking. Vegetable and seed oils may become rancid when subjected to heat, according to Phyllis Balch, author of "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." Rancid oils may destroy vitamin E reserves in your body, which may promote the release of uric acid into your bloodstream. Opt for cold-pressed olive oil for salads and as a dipping oil for whole-grain breads.
Beverages containing alcohol may increase your risk of gout attacks. Alcohol increases production of uric acid in your body, according to Balch. It may also inhibit the elimination of uric acid from your body through urine. Some types of alcohol, such as wine and beer, also contain yeasts that may contribute to gout.
Oxalate is a substance that may contribute to joint inflammation, according to Balch. This may cause or worsen gout symptoms. This substance is found in walnuts, chocolate, hazelnuts, black beans, tea, rhubarb and beets
Diet should not replace medical attention for gout. This condition may increase your risk of developing kidney stones. Also, food choices are not the only contributing factors to gout -- physical or emotional stress, heredity and high blood triglycerides may also contribute to this condition.
