Acne, a common skin condition, is characterized by pimples, cysts, clogged pores, bacteria and the buildup of dead cells within your skin, reports Merck Online Medical Library. Although acne usually occurs during your formative years, adults often suffer from it as well. Certain foods can irritate or inflame your acne, which can worsen the condition.

Omega-6 Fatty Acids

Consuming excessive amounts of omega-6 nutrients can lead to acne inflammation and redness. Although pro-inflammatory nutrients help guard your body from viruses and bacteria, excessive amounts can actually irritate your acne symptoms and make them worse, reports Acne Online. Examples of omega-6 foods to avoid include cheeseburgers, bacon, ham, pork and sausage patties.

Processed Foods

Consuming processed food sources may contribute to acne development or formation, according to Planet Green. These foods often contain added preservatives and synthetic colors, which can affect your liver's ability to filter the ingredients and initiate acne formation. Examples of processed foods include fast foods, fried foods, frozen foods and some canned foods.

Milk Products

According to an article appearing in Science Daily, ingredients in milk products, such as iodine, may cause or worsen acne symptoms. Iodine is rampant in milk products as farmers occasionally give their livestock iodine-fortified feed to reduce or prevent infection. In addition to iodine, researchers also theorize that feed hormones could influence acne development in humans.
