Liquid Collagen Remedies

Collagen is a protein that makes up a large portion of our connective tissue, including skin, tendons, bones and even our blood vessels, according to Dr. Ray Sahelian. Since such a large percentage of our connective tissue is comprised of this protein, our skin and other connective tissues can start to show the need for collagen supplements by loosening and causing wrinkles on our skin, weakening our bones and even leading to conditions like arthritis. Talk to your doctor before beginning any collagen supplementation regimen to ensure that your condition is not caused by a more serious problem.

Arthritis and Osteoarthritis

Liquid collagen supplements could have a positive effect for the more than 43 million Americans who suffer from arthritis. According to a 2009 study published in the "International Journal of Medical Sciences," collagen supplements may be effective at reducing the stresses on our bones caused by arthritis and osteoarthritis. Subjects in the study who took the collagen supplements showed a marked improvement over others in the same study who weren't given liquid collagen supplements.

Another study published in the "Nutrition Journal" in 2005 indicates that taking collagen supplements may be effective at helping slow or reverse the effects of bone mineral loss associated with osteoporosis.

Skin Health

A reduction in the levels of collagen in your body could speed up the onset of the aging process and result in premature aging due to sun damage, according to a study published in 2009 by the "Journal of Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry." The study notes that collagen works to slow the loss of fluid in the skin as a result of exposure to the sun. Scientists believe that this can help to provide a protein-based cushion between the layers of your skin, where wrinkles form.

Heart Health

Since collagen is the primary protein that comprises your blood vessels, a loss of collagen can have a negative effect on your heart, according to Dr. Sahelian. Lower collagen levels in your connective tissue as a result of the aging process can lead to swelling of your heart and dilation of your circulatory system, which can result in coronary artery disease.
