If you've suffered from acne, odds are you've either paid big bucks for over-the-counter products and treatment from a dermatologist or lamented the reality that you don't have such money to spend on clearing up your skin. And that can be demoralizing; according to a study by Oslo University Hospital in Norway, depression is two-to-three times higher in youths who have severe acne than in those who don't.
You don't have to break the bank to clear up acne. You might not even have to leave the kitchen.


Experts and studies have reached conflicting conclusions on whether or not drinking water directly reduces acne by flushing toxins from your system. But it's universally accepted that drinking increased amounts of water does hydrate the skin. Eight glasses a day is ideal.

Water is a double-threat when it comes to acne. You should also be washing your face with it two to three times daily, first using warm water with a gentle cleanser and then rinsing with cold water to seal off pores and protect your acne-prone skin from germs.


You're less likely to have acne problems if you eat food that's in your kitchen, specifically, items low in sugar rather than junk food and restaurant fare. So said a study conducted at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia.

The study looked at 50 acne-ridden males between the ages of 15 and 25, half of whom ate highly processed, high-glycemic foods. The other half, who focused on lean meats, grains and vegetables, saw more reduction in acne. The theory: highly-processed foods high in starch and sugars raise levels of insulin and hormones that are linked to acne inflammation.


Oatmeal is a common denominator in many over-the-counter acne products because it moisturizes skin and absorbs oils that may be sitting on the surface.

But if you have some oatmeal in your kitchen, no such purchase is necessary. An oatmeal mask is made by combining 1 tbsp. of dry oatmeal with 2 tbsp. of honey. You can add a bit of aloe vera lotion or dried lavender to this mixture as well. Grind into a paste, and coat affected areas. Allow it to sit on the skin for 15 minutes and rinse with cold water. Any longer, and you run the risk of drying your skin.
