Acne is a common inflammatory skin condition characterized by unsightly bumps of various kinds--pustules, whiteheads, blackheads and clogged pores. While the precise medical cause of acne remains elusive, it appears most commonly in teenagers whose body chemistry is in flux. In adults it is often associated with stress or with the onset of women's menstrual cycles. Kitchen remedies can help diminish acne symptoms and encourage smooth healthy skin.

Garlic

Garlic is an effective herbal antibiotic, according to Nancy Silva at the Kaplan University Center for Health and Wellness. While garlic deserves a place in every kitchen for its culinary value, garlic also has medicinal value, and has been demonstrated effective against a wide range of bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. Silva recommends using garlic topically for both acne and warts: Using a sharp knife, cut the tip off a peeled clove of fresh garlic, and rub it over the affected spot. Eating lots of fresh garlic can also be part of a nutritious, high-fiber, low-fat diet which may also alleviate acne, according to Columbia University Health Services.

Steam

Many acne symptoms--whiteheads and blackheads--are caused by dead skin and clogged pores. Columbia University Health Services advises that gently steaming your face several times a week can help open and cleanse pores, reducing the intensity of acne. Boil water in a kettle and pour it into a large bowl or basin. Drape a towel or blanket over your head to make a tent over the bowl of steaming water. Push back the cloth and step away from the bowl if it gets too hot, but try to stay over the water until the steam has dissipated. Use cold water to rinse your face after you are done steaming to close up those newly cleaned pores. You can also add skin-calming herbs to the bowl of steaming water. Edward Group, writing for A2Z of Health Beauty and Fitness, suggests that chamomile, lavender and mint are herbs that aid in skin improvement.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a common kitchen spice used for the golden color it imparts to canned goods, as well as to cooking curries and vegetable dishes. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, turmeric is used in Ayurvedic medicine as a topical treatment for acne. Group recommends making a paste of turmeric and vinegar and applying it as a plaster over acne-affected areas. Allow the paste to dry for 20 to 30 minutes then rinse thoroughly with warm water.
