Overview

Almost everyone gets acne, but it's your family's genetics that mostly determine whether you'll get acne scars. More severe acne plus the genetic disposition for your skin to react to pimples by creating scar tissues often equal skin with depressed scarring once your complexion clears. Dermatologists offer a variety of acne scar treatments, and some are using Juvederm facial filler to treat depressed scars.

Decision

Most acne scars are depressed, which injectable Juvederm filler can address. But not everyone wants treatment for her acne scars. If you think the scars limit your career or social life, you'll likely benefit from treatment, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. But it's important to realize that no treatment, including Juvederm or another facial filler, will erase your scars completely.

Product

Juvaderm is a gel made of hyaluronic acid that's designed to plump depressions in your skin. Juvaderm, one of several hyaluronic acid-filler products on the market, has Food and Drug Administration approval to treat facial wrinkles and folds, but doctors can use it to treat acne scars, as well. Juvaderm's manufacturer, Allergan Inc. of Irvine, Calif., offers two formulations. One comes with lidocaine, a numbing agent.

Treatment

If you decide to get Juvederm treatment, you will need to find a physician who offers the product. Side effects tend to be mild and can include swelling and skin reddening in the area treated. Some people also develop bruising, itching and skin discoloration in the treatment area. These effects should go away within seven days, and applying cold compresses can lessen them. There's a slight risk of infection, and you shouldn't use Juvederm at all if you have a medical history of allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins, the manufacturer says.

Time Frame

Facial fillers can fix acne scars quickly, but most types of fillers don't last forever, because the body slowly absorbs the material. In fact, they usually last for only six months, at which point you will need to repeat the procedure. Juvederm's manufacturer advertises studies showing that treatments can last for up to one year, but adds that you may need touch-up treatments during that time.

Considerations

Juvederm and other dermal facial fillers offer the fastest correction to depressed acne scars. But other forms of acne scar correction, such as surgery, laser treatments, chemical peels and dermabrasion, produce permanent results, according to the Academy of Dermatology. Dermatologists can combine permanent procedures with Juvederm, as well. If you have acne scars, talk with your physician about what's best for you.
