Overview

Scabies is a common cause of itchy burrows on the skin. The borrow tracks are made up of small bumps or blisters on the skin and appear between the fingers, inner elbow, soles of the feet and around the waist. Children commonly develop itchy burrows on the scalp, face and neck area. Fortunately, several treatments can address getting rid of these itchy burrows.

Causes

Microscopic mites depositing eggs under the skin cause itchy burrows. The body starts itching as an allergic reaction to the mites, eggs and waste. Scabies is highly contagious, spread through physical contact with humans. Sharing personal items such as bedding or clothing also spreads these mites.

Non-prescription Itching Relief

Soak your skin in cool water to minimizing itching. Over-the-counter calamine lotion and antihistamines also minimizes itching. Use medications as directed until symptoms get better.

Prevent reinfestation by washing all clothing and linens with hot water and drying with the highest heat setting your dryer has. Placing infested objects in a bag outside for two weeks is another method for preventing reinfestation. This starves the mites.

Prescription Treatments

Over-the-counter methods work to relieve itching, but you also need prescription medications to eliminate infestation. Permethrin is a prescription medication used to treat burrows. The medication is safe for children, pregnant women and adults.

Lindane is another medication used for adults, but it is not safe for people younger than 2 years of age or pregnant women. Doctors commonly prescribe crotamiton for babies with scabies. Apply the medication daily for up to five days.

Misconceptions

Scabies isn't spread through animal to human contact. Mites that live on animals don't thrive on humans. You can develop a small reaction to these mites but it won't develop into a scabies infection.

Warnings

If you have a condition that compromises your immune system, you need a different prescription medication. Stromectol is used for people with immune system issues and people resistant to other methods of treatment. Talk with your doctor about the best treatment method based on your health.
