The American Academy of Dermatology reports that acne is the result of excess oil in clogged pores, which causes inflammation and a breeding ground for bacteria. The severity of the clog and inflammation within the pore will determine the type of acne formed from simple blackheads to the most severe cysts. There are many topical applications to treating acne, but you can prevent breakouts internally as well.

Vitamins

Vitamin supplements boost the immune system and reduce inflammation. Vitamins A, C and E are strong antioxidants that help rebuild and repair skin tissues and fight against free radicals. Zinc also helps boost the immune system, heal wounds and reduce inflammation, and zinc is recommended by the Mayo Clinic as a natural treatment for acne. Acne can be a sign of vitamin A, B2, B3 or zinc deficiency.

Water

Drinking water throughout the day is one of the best things you can do for your skin. Start with the recommended eight 8 oz. glasses per day to help keep your skin fully hydrated. Natural Acne Remedy uses a full water balloon as a metaphor for fully hydrated skin cells. Full, a water balloon's surface is smooth and tight, and will bounce back when you touch it. Deflated, a water balloon's surface is wrinkled, misshapen and changes shape upon touch. Water is also essential to washing toxins from the skin, preventing them from building up and forming acne.

Oral Antibiotics

Oral antibiotics are often the first step in doctor-assisted treatment in conjunction with a topical treatment for moderate to severe acne. This will help to fight the acne-causing bacteria and reduce inflammation. When signs of improvement begin, the doctor may take the patient off the oral antibiotics to avoid a tolerance buildup to the medication.

Accutane

Accutane is the brand name of the drug isotretinoin. Isotretinoin is prescribed for the most severe forms of acne when most other treatments have failed to work. A patient taking isotretinoin must be diligent about making it to follow-up appointments because the doctor must monitor closely for possible severe side effects. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant cannot take isotretinoin due to its cause of severe birth defects.

Oral Contraceptives

Oral contraceptives are used to help treat acne in women. Hormone imbalances are a known cause of acne, and women's hormones fluctuate around their monthly cycle. Oral contraceptives help to balance these hormonal changes.
